STATHERN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at The Plough – 8.00 pm. NEW MEMBERS ALWAYS WELCOME!
February 13th: Interior Design ideas – Lauraine Baxendale
March 12th: Indian Cookery Demonstration – Chandan Patel
At their meeting in November, members were treated to a talk by Shirley Morley of Melton
Belvoir Rotary. She told us about the Aquabox Scheme which provides clean, safe drinking water in areas affected by disasters: war, drought, earthquake, flood, hurricane etc. The
Aquabox is a large strong plastic box containing a tap, a filter and sterilisation tablets together with survival bags, and is filled with humanitarian aid. The members were so impressed with this idea that it was unanimously agreed that the WI should purchase a box for £50, to be filled over the coming weeks/months before being sent to an area of need. The members further spontaneously decided to have an immediate collection, which raised £37 which was made up to £50.
At the AGM preceding Shirley’s talk, the Minutes of the 2006 AGM were circulated together with a Statement of Account for the period and the current Committee were unanimously elected en bloc: Joan Bray, Jean Cox, Valerie Clayphan (Secretary), Jackie Davis (Treasurer), Heather Davis, Tricia Robinson. Heather was re-elected President.

Topical Tip:
With the central heating coming on for long periods, our houseplants have a tough time in the dry air generated. Try to keep plants grouped together as much as possible and sit them on a saucer of wet pebbles. Alternatively, sit them in tepid water in the sink to a depth of halfway up the pot for an hour or so. This is especially good for reviving ailing cyclamen.
In February, think about staking herbaceous perennials as soon as new shoots begin to appear – this gives better results.
HAPPY GARDENING IN 2008!
