ST. GUTHLAC’S CHURCH

Lead theft from the Church

UPDATE ON THE CHURCH ROOF AS AT January 8th 2008

In the early hours of Friday 4th January thieves removed lead from St Guthlac’s church roof.  Lead was disturbed and damaged in five places and a strip of lead covering the chancel roof ridge and other flashing pieces were stolen.  In addition some coping stones and a down pipe were damaged.  The police have been contacted and we are arranging for repairs.  The estimated cost of the damage is £2000 and whilst the church is insured we will have to pay the £500 excess ourselves

If you see anything suspicious in connection with the church, please note any vehicle number and contact Roger Hawkins on 860215 or John Deave on 860340, or phone 999 in an emergency, or the Police Crime Desk on 0116 222 2222.

THE SANTA FUN RUN

On a very chilly Sunday morning, December 16th, the Shepherd family (David, Kate and Thomas) and the Fagan family (Martin, Sally and Helen) made their way bright and early to Wollaton Park in Nottingham to take part in the Santa Fun Run. This is an annual sponsored run in aid of the charity ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ which grants wishes for sick children. Their main event each year is when they take 2 plane loads of excited children to Lapland to meet Father Christmas.

The Stathern expedition to the Fun Run was in memory of young Lizzie Morris, who sadly passed away at the beginning of December, before we had chance to organise something special for her.

After being asked to arrive so early, we then had to hang around rather a long time before the run started, though we all had to dress up in Santa costumes which at least kept some of the chill away. We were entertained by Radio Nottingham and also a Nottingham girls cheerleaders’ group, who performed several of their routines (or did they do this just to keep warm since they were dressed in their miniskirt uniforms?!).

Just before the start, Thomas, 18 months, who had behaved so impeccably up till then, decided it was time to tell us that he was really tired, and David had no choice but to take him off for a sleep. Helen and Sally decided to run the course (OK it was only 2 kilometres round the park, but who put those big hills in?). Impressively they overtook the vintage car with Father Christmas that was motoring around.

Kate, expecting her second baby in June, had a good excuse to walk rather than run, and Martin decided he needed to keep her company (well that’s his excuse for walking!)

Good fun was had by all, and we raised over £300 for the charity as well. Many thanks to all those who sponsored us!

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Now that Christmas is over, maybe residents of Stathern will think about joining the team for monitoring the speeding in the village.  Three more volunteers are needed, so that when April arrives we will be ready.  It will involve one training session and then whatever time people can afford to give up.

Please either phone me, Judith Daws on  01949 860138 or e-mail on judithdaws@f2s.com.

BELVOIR FIRST AID

Belvoir First Aid, the Vale of Belvoir based first aid charity, have agreed a partnership with Melton Raynet to enhance the services being offered in the Vale and surrounding areas. Raynet are the Amateur Radio Emergency network and provide essential radio and data communication for the emergency services (including ambulance) in time of crisis and also for local events requiring large area communication. The partnership with Belvoir First Aid will enable them to offer event organisers a wide area radio communication service to support their events.

Belvoir First Aid’s event ambulance and mobile medical centre already have radio communications with Raynet, as well as short distance PMR radio services. In addition the partnership with Raynet will allow the ambulance to be tracked by GPS anywhere in the Vale area enabling a faster response to a location needing first aid services.

“ We are delighted to be working with Raynet” says Ian Shepherd, secretary of BFA, “the relationship will enable us to enhance our services to events in the Vale, thereby increasing the safety of these events”.

Raynet will be supporting Belvoir First aid on the forthcoming Belvoir Challenge in February. As part of this agreement BFA will be offering its members the opportunity to train with Raynet and to be able to mutually support each other’s organisations. In addition BFA also works with other first aid organisations locally and will be able to offer Raynet services to these as well. For more information please contact

Belvoir First Aid www.belvoirfirstaid.org.uk or Melton Raynet on 01664 500814, email roy.barkerg7arb@virgin.net

JESS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Jessica Goff from Stathern, who is currently studying for her A levels, is busy fundraising for her gap year trip to South Africa through the charity Project Trust. She needs to raise £4480 to achieve her dream of volunteering abroad. The exact placement has not yet been confirmed but Jess expects this to be working with orphaned children.

Amongst other things, she has been saving all her earnings from a part time job at a local kennels, has received £800 from Rotary, and following her latest fundraising venture of a Christmas buffet now has over half the amount needed. But the final push to reach the full amount is going to be tough!

Anyone wishing to donate money, or lend their support or with further fundraising ideas should contact Jess on jgoff.goff@btinternet.com or www.justgiving.com/jessicagoff1

WHEN CHIPS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!

Roger and Barbara Hawkins were delighted to get back their cat after it went missing from a cattery 18 months ago. A 94 year old resident of Waltham had been looking after it for a month when she called in the RSPCA.  They found Roger and Barbara’s details on the cat’s microchip. Where the cat had been prior to Waltham is unknown, however, he is now rather overweight and seems none the worse for his adventure! So who said that chips were bad for you!!??
